What is harmful sexual behaviour?
Harmful sexual behavior includes:
- Sexual activity where someone has not freely agreed to take part
- Involves pressure, threats or physical force
- When someone is under the age of 16 / when someone is much older and has more power / authority than the other person
- Viewing of child sexual material online
- Viewing or filming people in their private space for sexual benefit
- Sending messages or images of a sexual nature
- Talking online with someone under the age of 16
Concerning sexual thoughts and fantasies?
Concerning sexual ideation refers to intrusive sexual thoughts or fantasies that, if acted upon would cause harm to others. These thoughts often include sexual acts with children and young people and may be distressing.
What is problematic pornography?
Problematic pornography use happens when viewing sexual material online becomes excessive and begins to affect a person’s wellbeing or relationships. Over time, people may become desensitised and start seeking out more extreme or risky content, which can include harmful or illegal material
How can I be Referred?

Adult – 18 years and older
Explore our Adult ServiceIf you are 18 years and over, referrals are often made through a socials service professional, lawyer, police, GP’s or therapists. Clients under Corrections will likely be referred by their probation officer.
To reduce the barriers to accessing support, we do accept self-referrals, however we encourage that contact is made with the Adult Team Leader to confirm details, and criteria for referral, so we can support you in accessing the help you need.
Professionals and individuals seeking support are encouraged to contact Stop directly to discuss the most appropriate referral pathway for each client.

Adolescent – 18 years and younger
Explore our Adolescent ServiceIf you are 18 years and under, referrals are most often made by Oranga Tamariki or other professionals, including police, GPs’ or social service professionals. In some instances, self - referrals through whānau or the community are accepted. We encourage that if you have any questions that you contact Stop directly for a safe and confidential conversation about how to access the support you need.
Who is Stop
Stop is a community-based organisation that provides free, confidential, and non-judgmental support in the form of individual, group and family therapy.
With over 30 years of specialist experience, Stop is the only dedicated service in Te Waipounamu supporting tamariki (children), rangatahi (adolescent), pakeke (adult), and whānau to address both concerning and harmful sexual behaviour. Our evidence-based, therapeutic programmes are delivered by experienced clinicians and grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, trauma-informed practice, and cultural responsiveness.
